HERMÈS - "Christopher Columbus Discovers America, October 12, 1492" pattern designed by Carl de Parcevaux, released in 1992, reissued in 1998 and 2009.

Hand-rolled brocade silk scarf.

Created to mark the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s discovery of the Americas, this scarf depicts the caravel Santa Maria sailing—aboard which the explorer discovered the island of Guanahani (San Salvador) on October 12, 1492, while he believed he was landing in the Indies. On the right and left, the hemispheres of the Behaim Globe illustrate the knowledge of cartographers of the time, whose inaccuracies led Columbus to believe that the Indies were closer than they actually were.
At the top is the frontispiece of the book *Les Voyages* by Théodore de Bry (1528–1598), famous for its vivid descriptions of the first European expeditions to the Americas.
